Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if the veteran’s file was destroyed in the NPRC Fire of 1973?
About 16-18 million Army records (approximately 75%) stored at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis were destroyed in a fire in 1973. If the file was destroyed, the standard research fee is prorated to a reduced cost of $25. If your veteran’s file is not available, we have access to supplemental resources for an additional fee. These include Morning Reports, Rosters, Hospitalization Records, and Pay Vouchers that can help fill in the missing pieces of these veteran’s service history.
What records are available?
For textual records, such as military personnel records, the National Archives releases documents 62 years after the veteran’s discharge or retirement from service. Prior to this date, only information available via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) can be obtained.

How long does it take to receive my documents?
We strive to return records in a timely manner and within 2-4 weeks. Complete record requests will be placed with the National Archives within one business day from the order date. Incomplete record requests may require additional information and may take longer to process. The wait time for records is contingent on the National Personnel Records Center. Files that were damaged in the fire require additional processing time due to preservation needs before the file can be accessed by a researcher.
Are customized services or bundled packages available?
Absolutely! Whether you need a group of documents relating to a single unit or are looking for comprehensive research on an individual, we are glad to customize or bundle services for larger requests.

How will I receive my documents?
Documents are scanned in color and provided in a high-resolution .pdf format file. Images are cropped and edited for consistent formatting. Once files are complete, a final invoice will be sent for our services. Once payment is received, a cloud link to your files will be sent. Hard copies of files are available upon request for an additional fee. Additionally, files may be sent as individual .jpg images if requested at the time of order.
Can I submit a request without all of the veteran’s information?
The more information we have, the faster we can process your record request and with better results. However, if you need assistance in obtaining the necessary information to process a records request such as dates of birth, death, or service number we can help with that as well. Hourly research rates are available for requests from military collectors with partial information such as last name or laundry numbers.

I highly recommend Heritage Research Solutions. I needed Morning Reports and James obtained them within a few days. The quality of the scans was better than I had hoped and his fees are very reasonable as well. I will be utilizing his services again.

I sought out James and Heritage Research based on a recommendation by someone I didn't know on Facebook's Operation Dragoon site. So, I had some trepidation. James friendly manner and prompt responses assuaged any concerns I had. Additionally, he delivered all of the information I asked for in a very timely manner and made suggestions as to other records that might be of interest. I re-engaged him to obtain some of those records and they turned to to be very enlightening. I highly recommend James Paris and Heritage Research!

Just wanted to give feedback after someone recommended James Paris when I asked for help researching my Grandfather's unit in WW2. I can say that James was a pleasure, walked me through the whole process and delivered exactly what we agreed to. He did not ask me to say this nor gave me any sort of discount for a review, but I wanted to share in case anyone else is on the fence about getting help accessing records. He's a keeper!
